From 1994 to 1998 Albert Sickmann studied Chemistry at the Ruhr - University of Bochum .
He took his PhD in 2001 at the University of Bochum with a dissertation and earned his doctorate with the topic of "Proteome analysis of human cerebrospinal fluid."
In 2002 he was appointed a s Junior professor of "Protein Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics" at the Ruhr - University of Bochum. In 2003 he moved to the Rudolf Virchow Center, DFG Research Center for Experimental Biomedicine of the University of Würzburg. There he was appointed as professor for protein mass spectrometry in 2007. In 2008 he received the "Analytica Research Award" which is a joint award of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) and Roche. There upon Albert Sickmann moved to the Leibniz - Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften - ISAS - e.V. ( ISAS) to strengthen the research program in life science . Since 2009 he is the scientific director of the department bioanalytics at ISAS and since 2011 the CEO of the institute .
Albert Sickmann deals with the protein networks of yeast mitochondria and signal transduction in human platelets and is working on an improvement of analysis procedures and methods in the field of proteomics and systems biology.
His particular focus is mass spectrometry. Since 2009 Albert Sickmann is an elected member of the GBM scientific advisory board and taking care for t he study groups bioanalytics and bioinformatics.
Since 2013 he is the President of the German Society for Proteome Research (DGPF) and since 2015 member of the board of the European Proteomics Association (EuPA).
